The quartet are electrified and showcase their in-game skills while turning into cartoon-esque superheroes, suggesting their boots help turn boring games into something more eminently watchable. Everyone loves a good football boots ad, but this one, quite frankly, gets a bit annoying. 19. Gillette Messi's head is placed in a glass cube and is subjected to all sorts of conditions, the best of which are high-speed winds impacting g-force on his cheeks and a patch of turf impacting the side of his head in doubtless irritating fashion. He's then asked to shave with a new razor afterward—a little anticlimactic but worth seeing for him attempting to blink snow out of his eyes and not laugh at the wind force. 18. Messi Foot Bubbles Honestly, this one needed to be double checked to ensure it wasn't a spoof or parody—but nope, it's a genuine advert for Messi's own product. He embarks on a game of keepy-uppy with kids using...branded socks and bubbles. It's particularly hilarious to watch the marketing folk try to ensure it's a fast-paced visual despite bubbles obviously being incredibly slow-moving and, presumably, prone to popping. 17. Turkish Airlines On board a flight, Messi is spotted by a young fan who asks for an autograph—but the moment is interrupted by basketball star Kobe Bryant, sat a few seats behind. The two sports heroes compete for the kid's attentions, performing tricks to out-do each other...before a stewardess struts in to win the day by offering the unbeatable prize of ice cream. 16. Qatar Airways Most of the Barcelona squad feature in this one, with highlights including Neymar juggling a bottle of suncream, Luis Suarez riding a horse that does keepy-ups, Gerard Pique as a mime and Messi himself as a football-martial arts combo expert. Only Andres Iniesta manages to keep his dignity by merely accepting a glass of orange juice in reasonably normal fashion. 15. Pepsi Messi, as he no doubt frequently does, strolls into the desert with a bag of footballs and lines up a shot to knock over a can of soft drink. It sinks into the ground before he makes contact, with a meerkat then lining up to take his own shot. He beats a wall of meerkats, a tree, a rock and a mountain goat to knock down all three cans and celebrate sliding on his knees in front of the Barca man. Meerkat 1-0 Messi. 14. Turkish Airlines The selfie shootout sees Messi faces off once more with NBA star Bryant, with the two trading locations and flights to take photos in some of the most exotic and iconic locations imaginable. Bryant photobombing Messi's final picture as the two end up in the same Istanbul setting gives the basketball star the lead before they sprint off in opposite directions. 13. Pepsi Messi and his mates—Fernando Torres, Sergio Aguero, Drogba, Lampard et al—head to a Calvin Harris festival and spy a Pepsi machine at the back of the huge mass of music fans. They crowdsurf/play football their way across the horde, only to find when they reach the back, the machine is gone. Cut to Messi, crowdsurfing his way back to the front of the stage...riding on top of the drinks vending machine. 12. Ooredoo Messi joins a street game for a kickabout and enjoys parity with the kids for a spell, until they set about producing an increasingly improbable set of skills and movements. Trick shots, physics-defying ball control and plenty of goals for the youngsters has Messi wondering what's going on, until he realises a phone network system is controlling events. 11. Lays A brand of crisps that Messi endorses, this ad sees the Argentinian international strolling through the streets of Brazil, a nation that naturally has less affection for him than most on account of their international rivalry. While eating, Messi finds everyone wants a photo with him, only to later find they were merely stealing his snacks. He retaliates in the only possible way: by asking a random old lady on the street for a photo of his own. 10. Ooredoo A follow-up to the previous ad by the same company, some older boys challenge the street kids to a game—but begin by crushing the remote-controlled ball in favour of a real one the youngsters cannot control. Step forward their plan B: a remote-controlled robot Messi, capable of scaling walls, improbable feats of gymnastics and the odd wonder goal. The real Messi jogs past to meet his alter ego, too. 9. Herbalife A series of adverts in which Messi played other sports, the best of which we've selected as table tennis. While the No. 10 holds his own in each game, his route to winning is the same: He inevitably brings his football skills to the table—literally in this case—and fires an unstoppable volley in, this time clipping the net perfectly to win the point but also volleying in a three-pointer in basketball and taking a wicket in cricket. 8. adidas Messi is dreaming of the possibilities of success ahead of the 2014 World Cup final, in which he was set to be a star. Others feature including Xavi, Robin van Persie and Bastian Schweinsteiger, but it's Messi who has the final say. Of course, when it came to the actual final, Messi and his side fell inches short, and it was the German midfielder who was celebrating. 7. Gillette Roger Federer and Messi are together in an "elite athletes sport centre" in a thoroughly natural setting: Federer in bathrobe, Messi in full Argentina kit. They take turns shaving with a razor emblazoned with different national flags and "become" sports stars affiliated with those nations; Federer as a sumo wrestler and Messi as an international cricketer are particular highlights. They end up taking Argentina and Brazil razors and face off against each other in a football game—where there's naturally only one winner. 6. Turkish Airlines Another from the flight operator now; this face-off sees former Chelsea striker Didier Drogba embarking on a tour of the world to find delicious and rare plates of food...only to find Messi has been there before him each time. The end game sees Drogba happy to be served on board a flight—which has Messi's image over the entirety of the exterior. 5. Samsung This one was split into several adverts—but here's the final part, the actual match that the earlier ads led to: a high-speed chase, team selection and a training programme. Messi is asked to save the day against an alien spaceship hovering above the city, the inhabitants of which have challenged earth to a game of football. Franz Beckenbauer selects the side that features the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Mario Gotze and Iker Casillas. 4. FIFA 16 A Christmas-time advert where Messi and Aguero are playing FIFA at Santa's house, against a couple of reindeer. What's not to like? The Argentinian bullies hammer the hoof-hampered sledge-pullers, scoring a cracking goal apiece, with the reindeers duly afflicted with a good old case of rage quit. 3. Pepsi A pretty cool video of Messi along with other stars including Kaka, Drogba, Frank Lampard and Andriy Arshavin, as they don pretty hideous shirts and are challenged to an impromptu kickabout in Africa. With highlights such as Kaka being tripped up by a meerkat, Messi running into a tree and an own goal by Drogba thanks to a revolving human pitch, the grand finale sees everyone celebrating together—except for pint-sized Messi, who is lost in the long savannah grass. 2. FIFA 14 Messi (and his dog) speeds out into the desert in a van before projecting a huge TV screen behind him, on which the then-new FIFA console game was playable. A succession of everyday fans and football stars of the day then join in, sat on beds, sofas and chairs, all speeding merrily along in the desert. They overtake each other based on who wins, and the likes of Stephan El Shaarawy, Tim Cahill, Javier Hernandez and Gareth Bale all feature. 1. adidas There Will Be Haters was a series of ads for a range of football boots, with Messi's version predictably epic. Focusing somewhat on the online culture's habit of putting players down, Messi is told he'll never reach a succession of ever-impressive feats: score with his right foot, have fans wearing his shirt, win a Ballon d'Or, be the greatest player ever. All of which he has (arguably) already achieved, of course.
