His third album, SoulFly (2021), debuted at number 1 on the Billboard 200 (marking his first chart-topping album).[10] Career Wave's career began in 2016, with the release of his mixtape Hunger Games Vol.1. He released several mixtapes independently prior to signing with Alamo Records. On June 14, 2019, he released his mixtape PTSD, which included the song "Heart on Ice". The song went viral on YouTube and TikTok, peaking at number 25 on the Billboard Hot 100.[7] Wave's debut album, Ghetto Gospel, was released on November 1, 2019. It peaked at number 10 on the US Billboard 200.[8] Rod Wave's second album, Pray 4 Love, was released on April 3, 2020. It debuted at number 2 on the Billboard 200, with a deluxe edition following on August 7. Several songs from the album charted on the Billboard Hot 100, including "s" (featuring ATR Son Son),[11][12][13] which peaked at number 12 on the Hot 100 and became his highest-charting song.[14] On August 11, 2020, Wave was included on XXL's 2020 Freshman Class.[15] In July 2020, Wave revealed during an interview that he was working on his third album, which was originally scheduled for August 27, 2020.[2] He revealed the track list for his album SoulFly on March 6, 2021.[16][17] The album also includes songs "Street Runner" and "Tombstone", his highest-charting song which peaked at number 11 on the Hot 100.[18][19] In late 2021, Wave's release of the song "Nirvana" generated some controversy because many regarded the song as a suicide letter, which Wave strongly denied.[20] In January 2022, Wave released the single "Cold December". On May 1, 2022, he released a freestyle of Future's "Wait for U", in which he revealed his next album would be titled Beautiful Mind, while also announcing that he had turned the album in on April 25, 2022. The album was released on August 12, 2022.[20] Rod Wave Rod Wave in 2021 Rod Wave in 2021 Background information Birth name Rodarius Marcell Green Born August 27, 1998 (age 24) St. Petersburg, Florida, U.S. Genres Hip hopR&Bsoul-trap Occupation(s) Rappersingersongwriter Years active 2016–present Labels AlamoGeffenInterscopeHit House[1] Children 2[citation needed] Website officialrodwave.com Artistry Wave has been recognized for his "candor and shrewd ability to tug at listeners' heartstrings".[2] ABC News Radio's Rachel George noted that "music is a direct expression of Wave's life, which is why he's cautious yet open to working with other artists who share his passion".[21] Wave grew up listening to E-40, who was featured in his song "Calabasas", Chingy, Boosie Badazz, Chief Keef, Kanye West, and Kevin Gates, who would later be featured in his song "Cuban Links".[22] Discography Main article: Rod Wave discography Ghetto Gospel (2019) Pray 4 Love (2020) SoulFly (2021) Beautiful Mind (2022) Awards and nominations Year Organization Work Award Result 2021[23] Billboard Music Awards Himself Top New Artist Won References "Rod Wave (Alamo/Geffen/Interscope)". It was released on YouTube on November 14, 2021, before being uploaded to other platforms on November 22. It is the lead single to Wave's fourth studio album Beautiful Mind (2022). The song sees Rod Wave open a new chapter in life, while reflecting on life after the nine months since he released his third album, SoulFly. The chorus interpolates the Plain White T's' "Hey There Delilah" (2006). Background and composition In March 2021, Rod Wave released his second album, SoulFly, which has a track called "Gone Till November", on which he promises: "So I, I'll be gone 'til November, go in and mark your calendar". He fulfilled that promise by releasing "By Your Side" onto YouTube on November 14, and on other digital platforms on November 22. He opens the song by acknowledging that promise.[1] Furthermore, the song contains pitched up vocals and "trunk-rattling" 808s, as Rod reflects on all the success he has achieved in the last year and his progession in the music industry, while also accepting his past.[2][3] The song contains only one verse, and towards the end of it, Rod references his 2019 track "Cuban Links", on which he raps that he will die wearing Cuban Link jewelry; on "By Your Side" though, he dismisses that notion, as he now prefers luxury brand Richard Mille, and has found a renewed interest in life ("I got inside my bag and got out my feelings").[1] In the chorus, Rod directly interpolates the first verse from Plain White T's's 2006 single "Hey There Delilah", except he changes "Hey there Delilah" to "Hey there everybody".[1][4] Genius' Ken Partridge opined that "'By Your Side' isn't a love letter to one person; it's a song for anyone who's stuck in their feelings and would like a little company".[1] Music video The music video accompanied the song's release and shows behind-the-scenes footage of Rod Wave's SoulFly tour.[2] Charts Weekly charts Weekly chart performance for "By Your Side" Chart (2021–2022) Peak position Global 200 (Billboard)[5] 119 US Billboard Hot 100[6] 58 US Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs (Billboard)[7] 10 US Rhythmic (Billboard)[8] 22 Year-end charts 2022 year-end chart performance for "By Your Side" Chart (2022) Position US Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs (Billboard)[9] 38 Release history Release history for "By Your Side" Region Date Format Label Ref.
