Clearview’s CEO and co-founder, Cam-Hoan Ton-That, and his associates chose to mass-violate social media policies against scraping accounts to build an image warehouse of unprecedented size, as several outlets have noted recently.

Some entity that calls itself “Cam-Hoan Ton-That” has you in his/her/its database, but you definitely have no reason to worry about anything whatsoever, and may as well just go immediately back to your feverish err pleasant dreams. Little is known about Ton-That, a 31-year-old Australian hacker who moved to San Francisco in 2007. He made a name for himself two years later by unleashing a computer worm that phished the login credentials of Gmail users. Ton-That showed no remorse after journalists traced the worm to him— he simply set up another phishing site.

Clearview also appears to spy on law enforcement searches. After a Times reporter had police officers run her photo through the app, the officers received calls from Clearview representatives asking if they were speaking to a journalist. The potential for abuse is vast.

The HuffPost report also details a web of more ambiguous connections between Ton-That and alt-right figures like Chuck Johnson, Pax Dickinson, and Richard Spencer. Ton-That was active on Johnson’s WeSearchr platform and appears to have socialized extensively with Johnson. Johnson also promoted Clearview extensively within his circle, even giving a private demo to a passenger on a plane. His broader involvement in the company is unclear, and Johnson has made various contradictory statements regarding it.

In his statement, Ton-That described those associations as the product of a life spent on the internet. “I learned about the world, its inhabitants and ideas online,” Ton-That said. “It had not always been a straight path, and it had not always served me well. There was a period when I explored a range of ideas—not out of belief in any of them, but out of a desire to search for self and place in the world. I have finally found it, and the mission to help make America a safer place.”

Well, if even Richard Spencer is involved, then we know for sure that nothing is alarming at all in here. Just read Ton-That’s statement in the paragraph quoted above; so eloquent, so straightforward, so marvelous. Clearview AI CEO Hoan Ton-That has confirmed that the company is currently in talks with multiple state and federal agencies to implement a contact tracing program to track the spread of COVID-19. The program would use facial recognition to identify people who may have interacted with someone who later tested positive for the disease.

Contact tracing programs have been an important part of the coronavirus response in other countries, and even within some states. However, Clearview’s flagrant disregard for privacy – as well as its repeated efforts to deflect public scrutiny – raise enormous red flags about its potential involvement in such a far-reaching scheme.
